Our Story

From A Small Passion Project To An Established Not-For-Profit Organisation

A Humble Beginning

As a penultimate year law student at UCL, Omar Negm was keen on preparing to launch his legal career in commercial law. He embarked on his journey to secure a training contract at one of London's top law firms. However, navigating vacation schemes and training contract applications proved to be a challenging and elaborate task. After months of studying this process, Omar successfully secured two training contract offers at Linklaters and Deloitte.

TMC was born when Omar saw the value in sharing his knowledge of commercial law and the application process by inviting others to one-on-one mentorship through Linkedin. This gained a lot of attention from aspiring solicitors and highlighted the need for support in this area. Omar invited other future trainee solicitors embarking on a legal career in commercial law to join his endeavour by becoming mentors to support others. A team of dedicated mentors was formed, which drove TMC to where it is today.

Out of 50 applicants in the first round, 20 candidates were selected in August 2022 as TMC's first cohort of mentees. These mentees were supported initially by a team of six mentors. Today, TMC has over 90 mentees being supported by 40 mentors through one-on-one mentorship, commercial awareness workshops, and interview preparation sessions. During the 2022/2023 recruitment cycle, about 80% of TMC mentees reached the assessment centre stage and over 50% secured at least one vacation scheme or legal internship.

Looking ahead, TMC will expand its community further in order to support more mentees from ethnically diverse backgrounds in accessing and securing vacation schemes and training contracts in commercial law firms. Our team is looking to form strategic partnerships with law firms, law societies, non-profit organisations, DEI initiatives and other mentorship programmes to advance ethnic diversity in the legal profession and bridge the gap between ethnically diverse aspiring solicitors and their future legal careers.
